Every few weeks, I make a yummy smoothie concoction full of fruits, vegetables, dairy, seeds, and so on, all with one goal in mind: to make sure my toddler boy has at least one very healthy snack and/or meal each day. The texture of vegetables bothers him and he refuses to eat veggies off the table, so this is the only way I can get him to eat healthy. (As a person who hates fruits and vegetables, I desperately want him to eat healthier than me!)

(Side note: I’m always looking for simple meals to make for real table food, too. If you’ve found a toddler-approved meal, would you be a pal and share it?!)

A Few Tips…

  • Steaming fruit and vegetables makes them softer and easier to mash up for a smooth consistency. While not all fruit requires it, I definitely recommend doing it for all vegetables and firmer fruit.

  • Steaming can be done over the stove, but my sister gave me this Babycook all-in-one steamer/blender, and it’s definitely simplified my life! However, it’s an investment piece and if you aren’t ready to commit yet, using the pot over a pot trick to steam the food first will work as well. If you go that route, a food processor or Nutribullet would be necessary as well, to make the smoothies…smooth. ;)

  • You can serve the smoothies right away, or you can freeze them up to 3 months. I like to serve some immediately, and then freeze the remainder in a gallon freezer bag with label.

  • Smoothies can be served in any cup with a wide straw or spoon, but my little guy loves when I serve them in a pouch. So, I spoon them into pouches, which makes them a great on-the-go breakfast or snack. I’ve been using (and loving) these reusable pouches. The bottom seal opens for easy filling, and they clean right up in the dishwasher.

Well folks, that’s about the gist of it. This entire lot of frozen smoothies took me the better part of a day to make & freeze, with lots of distractions and daily tasks woven inbetween. Although it can take a bit to prep, I now have daily healthy smoothies ready for several months. WIN!!
